Cork Flooring

When customers are looking for sustainable, eco-friendly products, cork and bamboo are often at the top of the list. While cork flooring is not a new product in the industry, bamboo flooring is a somewhat more recent introduction. Both of these products are manufactured from a renewable source, durable, low-maintenance and have an appealing wood-like appearance at a reasonable price. For those with chemical sensitivities, there are usually both cork and bamboo floor options that will meet your needs, with low “VOC” (volatile organic compounds) and other chemicals.

Since opening our doors in 2005, Floors Depot has been proud to be the premier flooring services and products provider in the Greater Vancouver Area. Let our almost two decades’ of experience work for you so that you can focus on the next step of your renovation with peace of mind.

While cork flooring has been in use for almost 100 years, it is currently making a comeback as consumers become increasingly focused on flooring sourced from renewable resources. Cork flooring is made from leftovers from the process of manufacturing corks for the wine industry. The material is sourced from the bark of a tree, which can be harvested every few years without damage.

Cork is a product with many advantages. While having an attractive appearance reminiscent of wood, it has a yielding, slightly spongy texture.  Not only does this make it soft underfoot, but it also makes it a very quiet product. Cork is naturally resilient, with organic compounds from the cork tree giving it resistance to moisture, mold, insects and even fire. Modern cork flooring can also be treated with a sealant making it virtually 100% waterproof, allowing you to install cork flooring almost anywhere.

Bamboo Flooring.jpg

Bamboo flooring is a relatively new flooring product manufactured from the fast-growing bamboo plant. A finished bamboo floor has a very similar appearance to a hardwood floor, and is slightly harder. Once it has been treated and sealed, bamboo is also slightly more resistant to moisture and scratching than a hardwood floor. Engineered bamboo flooring is a special product that is made of a processed bamboo layer on top of a plywood plank. This product is extremely resilient while also being easy to install, as the planks simply ‘click’ together.

In comparison with hardwoods, bamboo also has a much lower price, with the downside that it cannot usually be refinished – leading to a product that usually has a 10-15 year lifespan.

However, some bamboo products can last for two decades or more if they are specially treated and maintained.

Questions about whether cork or bamboo is the right material for your floor? Our team of professionals is standing by to help you pick the perfect product.

Commercial Cork Flooring.jpg

For high-traffic commercial areas, there are specialized tiles available in both cork and bamboo. These products combine the advantages that make cork and bamboo attractive for residential purposes with special treatment or finishes that result in a floor resilient enough for commercial applications.

Commercial cork flooring tiles typically have a special polyurethane coating that makes it extremely resilient to wear, moisture, and dirt, while still having the soft, quiet feel that makes cork attractive.

Commercial bamboo products are specially treated, resulting in an extremely resilient product that can be twice as hard as comparable hardwood at a lower price point. This is a great choice of flooring for businesses that want to advertise their commitment to sustainability.

At Floors Depot, we’re prepared to assist you on every step of the installation process. Once you’ve selected your cork floor tiles of choice, our team will visit your house to provide you a detailed quote on installation. While some homeowners opt for a DIY cork flooring installation, we always recommend sticking with our team of trained professionals for a superior final look and optimal resistance to moisture.

Once the day of installation arrives, we will arrive on-site to remove your old floor and safely move any furniture you might have out of the way. Then we’ll proceed with the installation of your new cork floor! Our team is very well practiced and with most properties we are in and out on the same day.

We required an emergency floor replacement due on very short notice. We called Alex at 4pm on Friday afternoon and he was there by 6. Within days our floor was replaced and we were able to move back in. Alex and his team did an outstanding job. Their customer service is excellent. Marjan and I highly recommend Floors Depot!

Alex was a clear communicator. The job was done quickly and he was accommodating to our tight schedule. When some unforeseen challenges came up with the renovation (out of his control) he solved it and kept the project on schedule. Our floors look great, and the whole experience was stress free. I would highly recommend Alex to anyone!

What are the main differences between cork and bamboo floors?

Bamboo flooring is a hard surface with a similar appearance to a hardwood floor, while cork flooring is soft and spongy, with a wood-like but unique look.

Can I install cork or bamboo flooring in my kitchen?

Both cork and bamboo flooring are suitable for a kitchen floor. However, it should be kept in mind that most products are not 100% waterproof, so spills should be mopped away quickly and not be allowed to sit.

How long do cork and bamboo floors last?

Bamboo floors can last from 10 to 25 years, depending on the product and the level of maintenance, while cork floors can last up to 30 years if maintained properly.
