Hardwood Flooring in a living room by Floors Depot

Solid hardwood is a wonderful flooring material that makes for an elegant, classic look in your home. While solid hardwood does come with a higher price tag, in exchange you get a product with fantastic longevity that can last lifetimes. If you ever opt to put your home on the market, buyers tend to appreciate the investment demonstrated by a solid hardwood floor – and it shows in the home price. As you read along, we’ll share some of the features that make solid hardwood such a special product and why it is one of the mainstays of our business.

We understand that installing a new floor in your home or building is a big, personal decision. Since opening our doors in 2005, Floors Depot has been proud to be the premier flooring services and products provider in the Greater Vancouver Area. Let our almost two decades’ of experience work for you so that you can focus on the next step of your renovation with peace of mind.

Solid Wood Flooring

Solid hardwood flooring consists of planks of real hardwood. The exact look and feel of the wood will give your floor a unique character, so it’s important to give the tree species some thought (see below).

Besides its great appearance, hardwood flooring has other key advantages. When properly cared for and maintained, hardwood is one of the most durable flooring materials available. Most small scratches or scuffs will not penetrate the finish, leaving the wood untouched. Should something happen to the underlying wood, your floor can be completely refinished, which will remove scratches, scuffs, stains and discolouration. A refinished floor looks brand new! Most solid hardwood floors can be refinished ten to twelve times over their lifespan.

Hardwood is also an all-natural product, and most solid hardwood on the market is now sourced sustainably. Dust, dirt, hair and other irritants have no place to hide on a wood floor, making it a great choice for those with allergies.

Of course, any choice always comes with a few downsides. Hardwood is a more expensive option, meaning your budget won’t go as far as with other products. Your floor will also be more vulnerable to moisture, which can stain the wood, or with chronic exposure can cause warping or bending in your floor.

The wood species for your floor is a big decision. The wide range we stock at Floor Depot allows us to offer you a stunning variety of colour, shade, durability and more. Here are three favourites to give you an example of the variety on offer:

  • Maple

A mainstay of Canadian construction for centuries, maple continues to provide us with an outstanding material for hardwood floors. Extremely durable, maple is a dependable choice with a surprising amount of variety in colour.

  • White Oak

A favourite wood in recent years, white oak provides a tough floor that is resistant to dents and impacts. Even better, the wood readily accepts a variety of stains, giving you freedom to customize the appearance of your new floor.

  • Walnut

When you need to make a statement, walnut is your wood of choice. Its dark, rich tones add an elegant warmth to any room. However, walnut is a softer wood that requires more care and maintenance to keep it looking at its best.

A sample of some of our other popular woods includes:

  • Red Oak

  • Cherry

  • Mahogany

  • Sapele

  • Hickory

Besides being a beautiful, all-natural addition to any home, hardwood floors offer several key advantages that make them one of the best investments you can make in your property. Here are just a few of the many benefits of hardwood floors:

Long lasting – Hardwood floors can last decades, even centuries if they are properly maintained. Luckily with a hardwood floor, cleaning and maintenance is easy and simple.

Refinish – A hardwood floor can be refinished as many as ten or twelve times, rejuvenating it and leaving it looking as good as new!

Nature’s Solution – Hardwood floors are made from all-natural materials that are non-allergenic and can easily be kept clean of dust and other irritants. They’re also an excellent insulator – heat, cold, noise and other elements will not pass through them as easily as they do with other flooring types.

Family-friendly – Children can play on hardwood floors without worry of scratches, and they're durable enough for rough wear from pets as well. Hardwood floors also provide comfort underfoot and keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Nothing adds value to your home quite like a luxury hardwood floor. If you want to stand out from other properties in your area, a hardwood floor can be a great addition – you’ll enjoy it while you live in the property and benefit again when it comes time to put your home on the market. A beautiful floor is a great indication to a prospective buyer of the quality of construction and care put into your home.

We required an emergency floor replacement due on very short notice. We called Alex at 4pm on Friday afternoon and he was there by 6. Within days our floor was replaced and we were able to move back in. Alex and his team did an outstanding job. Their customer service is excellent. Marjan and I highly recommend Floors Depot!

Kevin Day

Alex was a clear communicator. The job was done quickly and he was accommodating to our tight schedule. When some unforeseen challenges came up with the renovation (out of his control) he solved it and kept the project on schedule. Our floors look great, and the whole experience was stress free. I would highly recommend Alex to anyone!

Joey Mitchell

Great price and excellent service from the Floors Depot store! They did a beautiful job installing our new laminate floors and paying special attention to finishings and trims. Thank you for a job well done. I will definitely refer you to my family and friends.

How much will my hardwood flooring cost?

Every job will have its own unique cost, depending on the home and your needs and preferences as a customer. As a rough estimate, we typically quote in the range of $3 – $8 per square foot, but we would love to have an individual conversation about your requirements and provide you with a free quote.

Are engineered hardwood floors worth it?

Based on our intense positive feedback over the last two decades, the answer is “Yes!” as far as we’re concerned. The unique advantages of a product with the appearance of solid hardwood at a more affordable price, all while being equally or even more durable make it easy for us to recommend them. Ultimately the choice is yours, but we would love to convince you!

How long does hardwood last?

While this ultimately depends on the wear out on the floor and the level of care, thinner engineered hardwood floors are estimated to last 20-30 years, while thicker hardwood lasts closer to 40-80.
