ENGINEERED HARDWOOD FLOORING STORE

Hardwood Flooring in a living room by Floors Depot

Hardwood could be called the classic flooring material. Hardwood looks great, has fantastic longevity, and adds a feeling of luxury to every home it is installed in.

However, solid hardwood comes with some drawbacks – including a weakness to moisture (causing discolouration or warpage), a complicated installation and a big price tag.

If any of these factors are turning you off, engineered hardwood is a great compromise that could be the perfect choice for your home. It offers increased moisture resistance, an easier installation, and is easier on your budget!

We understand that installing a new floor in your home or building is a big, personal decision.

Since opening our doors in 2005, Floors Depot has been proud to be the premier flooring services and products provider in the Greater Vancouver Area. Let our almost two decades’ of experience work for you so that you can focus on the next step of your renovation with peace of mind.

ENGINEERED HARDWOOD FLOORS

Engineered Wood Flooring

Engineered hardwood is a product designed to mimic the appearance of hardwood flooring at a lower price and with a few advantages. While it was once regarded as a cheap or inferior imitation, modern engineered flooring products are crafted to a high standard and have a very similar appearance.

Engineered hardwood flooring is crafted from several layers of high-quality plywood bonded together and attached to a thin veneer of hardwood flooring.

Plywood is a more moisture-resistant material than hardwood, so the core is less likely to warp under mild moisture exposure than a hardwood floor. As each plank of engineered hardwood is already bonded to its plywood core, there is no need for an extensive subfloor preparation before installation, which is another great advantage, particularly for DIYers.

Given that engineered hardwood flooring is cheaper than solid hardwood, you might be asking – what’s the catch? The main disadvantage of engineered hardwood is longevity. The thick planks of a solid hardwood floor can be sanded down and refinished as many as ten or twelve times throughout the floor’s lifespan. This ability to restore the floor is why some hardwood floors have lasted over a century in great condition. In comparison, you will only be able to restore an engineered hardwood floor as few as one or two times.

Once you’ve decided on installing engineered hardwood flooring, your next big decision is your species. The wide range we stock at Floor Depot allows us to offer you a stunning variety of colour, shade, durability and more. Here are three favourites to give you an example of the variety on offer:

  • Maple

A mainstay of Canadian construction for centuries, maple continues to provide us with an outstanding material for hardwood floors. Extremely durable, maple is a dependable choice with a surprising amount of variety in colour.

  • White Oak

A favourite wood in recent years, white oak provides a tough floor that is resistant to dents and impacts. Even better, the wood readily accepts a variety of stains, giving you freedom to customize the appearance of your new floor.

  • Walnut

When you need to make a statement, walnut is your wood of choice. Its dark, rich tones add an elegant warmth to any room. However, walnut is a softer wood that requires more care and maintenance to keep it looking at its best.

A sample of some of our other popular wood species includes:

  • Red Oak

  • Cherry

  • Mahogany

  • Sapele

  • Hickory

ADVANTAGES OF ENGINEERED HARDWOOD FLOORS

Besides being a beautiful addition to any home, engineered hardwood floors offer several key advantages that make them a great addition to your property. Here are just a few of the many benefits:

Last Decades – Provided they are well cared-for, engineered hardwood floors can last two to three decades – or more!

Refinishing – Engineered hardwood floors can usually be refinished between one and three times. This will restore the wood to a condition as good as new, and remove any scratches, mild stains, or scuffs.

Family-friendly – Children can play on hardwood floors without worry of scratches, and they're durable enough for rough wear from pets as well. Hardwood floors also provide comfort underfoot and keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

If solid hardwood is out of budget at the moment, an engineered hardwood floor can be a great compromise. It’s also a great way to stand out from other properties in your area, you’ll enjoy it while you live in the property and benefit again when it comes time to put your home on the market. A beautiful floor is a great indication to a prospective buyer of the quality of construction and care put into your home.

Alex was a clear communicator. The job was done quickly and he was accommodating to our tight schedule. When some unforeseen challenges came up with the renovation (out of his control) he solved it and kept the project on schedule. Our floors look great, and the whole experience was stress free. HARDWOOD FLOORING FAQ

How much will my hardwood flooring cost?

Every job will have its own unique cost, depending on the home and your needs and preferences as a customer. As a rough estimate, we typically quote in the range of $3 – $8 per square foot, but we would love to have an individual conversation about your requirements and provide you with a free quote.

Are engineered hardwood floors worth it?

Based on our intense positive feedback over the last two decades, the answer is “Yes!” as far as we’re concerned. The unique advantages of a product with the appearance of solid hardwood at a more affordable price, all while being equally or even more durable make it easy for us to recommend them. Ultimately the choice is yours, but we would love to convince you!

How long does hardwood last?

While this ultimately depends on the wear out on the floor and the level of care, thinner engineered hardwood floors are estimated to last 20-30 years, while thicker hardwood lasts closer to 40-80.
