YOUR TRUSTED VANCOUVER
CARPET FLOORING STORE
Carpet is the classic choice for a floor that’s soft to the touch, with many advantages that have kept it a popular flooring choice for decades. The first, of course, is the texture. While carpet is available in a huge array of textures, patterns, and styles, they all have the advantage of being soft to the touch. This ability of carpet to act as a shock absorber also means it is naturally a very quiet product. Carpet has also proven to be an excellent product for those with asthma or allergy concerns. When you include its lower cost, you have a very attractive package that could be perfect for your next flooring project.

We will give you background on the wide variety of carpet flooring products available and which might be the right fit for your next project.

TYPES OF CARPET FLOORING
CARPET PILES
When talking about different styles of carpet, one of the first characteristics to be aware of is the “pile”. Carpet piles are the loops of material that actually make up the soft carpet surface that you walk across. The length of the pile (typically described as low, middle, or high) plays a big part in the look and feel of your carpet.

-
Low Pile: These carpets closely hug the underlying floor, without much “fluff”. An advantage of this is that it makes it easier to move objects, such as furniture or toys, over the surface of the carpet without getting stuck. This makes it perfect for a dining room or play area. Being less deep, it is also easier to clean and more resistant to staining for this reason.

-
High Pile: When you think of a classic, luxurious deep carpet, you are thinking of high pile carpet. These carpets are incredibly soft and give the room a warm, cozy feeling. Another advantage is that these carpets flatten much more slowly over time, preserving your desired appearance for years to come.

-
Middle Pile: Unsurprisingly, this is a style in between low and high pile. It shares the advantages of both, but not to the same extent as a pure low or high pile carpet. This makes it a good general choice for most situations.
CARPET MATERIALS
Carpet has the advantage of being available in a wide variety of materials, all with their own properties and strong points. Here are some of the more popular materials we retail:

-
Nylon: The most popular carpet material, nylon is extremely soft, durable, and resistant to staining and wear. Nylon holds its colour well, and also resists mildew and mould. While more expensive than some other synthetic carpet materials, nylon is still very affordable.
-
Triexta: Triexta is a novel synthetic carpet material that is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative for nylon. It offers superior stain-resistance, sustainability, and warranty protection vs. nylon, but is slightly less resilient to wear.
-
Polyester: Another popular synthetic carpet material, polyester is a cheaper synthetic option than nylon, but more expensive than olefin. Polyester holds colour extremely well, but can be prone to flattening with extensive traffic.
-
Wool: A classic choice for carpets going back centuries, wool is prized for its luxurious feel, softness, and appearance. As an all-natural choice, wool is also ideal for those with allergies or chemical sensitivities, or those seeking a 100% renewable carpet material. Wool does have some downsides, including a very high cost for quality wool, susceptibility to stains, and a weakness to humidity.
-
Olefin: A synthetic product made out of polypropylene, olefin has a similar texture to wool at a fraction of the cost. They are highly resistant to stains, but prone to collecting dirt. However, olefin is easier to clean than wool. Olefin is somewhat less durable than nylon, but is cheaper than either nylon or wool.
CARPET STYLES
A carpet’s style refers to a combination of pile length, pattern and other characteristics that are used to categorize a carpet. Here is a profile of some of the more popular indoor carpet styles:

-
Texture: The threads of this carpet style alternate, creating a two-toned appearance. This is a very durable style of carpet that easily hides footprints, vacuum marks, and soiling, making it suitable for anywhere in your home.

-
Berber: This style of carpet has bulky yarns that are looped together. The ends of the yarn aren’t cut in Berber carpet, giving this style excellent durability. It is ideal for high traffic living spaces and comes in a wide variety of colours and patterns.

-
Pattern: Pattern style includes two different colours of thread, some of which are cut and some are not to produce patterns and swirling designs. Carpet in this attractive style is suitable for both high and low traffic areas.

BROADLOOM CARPET
When you think of large, 12-15 ft. rolls of carpeting, you’re thinking of broadloom. Broadloom is laid out over carpet padding and must be cut to fit corners and tight areas. It is a cost-effective product, available in a wide range of materials and styles. However, the process of cutting to fit results in wasted product, and if a piece of carpet needs to be replaced later on, often the carpet from the entire room must be replaced as well.
CARPET TILES
Carpet tiles are pre-cut sections of carpet with a built-in section of backing attached. These tiles are exceptionally easy to install, and can be sized to fit any space with minimal waste. The added advantage is that should any sections need to be replaced later, it can be done easily without any disruption to the other sections of the carpet.
AREA RUGS
Area rugs are carpets that are not attached to the floor. They come in a wide range of styles, materials, and sizes, and are available at every price point. As they can be moved at any time, area rugs are a very flexible option, and are available in sizes and styles suited for hallways, dining rooms, bedrooms and more.
STAIR CARPET
Carpet is a great choice for covering your stairs, as it both reduces noise and provides some padding in the event of a fall. When choosing a stair carpet, we typically recommend a low-pile as it will better fit the contours of the steps. Our experts would be happy to answer any questions you might have about your choice of a carpet for your stairs.
COMMERCIAL CARPET FLOORING
Commercial-grade carpet is a low-pile, high durability carpet typically produced in a Berber style. Commercial carpeting is available in a wide range of styles, patterns, and colours. The main characteristic separating commercial carpet from residential is its extreme durability. This means that commercial carpeting is less soft and forgiving, but the trade off is worth it for high-traffic commercial areas that require a material with longevity.
CARPET INSTALLATION
We pride ourselves on the smoothness of our installation process. From your first conversation to us to the final installation, we aim to delight you every step of the way.

Once you’ve selected your carpet material of choice with our team, we’ll visit you at your property to perform detailed measurements and provide you with a quotation.

When the day of installation arrives, our team will remove all of your furniture from the installation area. Then, we’ll remove your old carpeting if necessary for us to dispose of later.

Depending on the product you’ve decided upon, we’ll either proceed directly to installing the carpet tiles, or to installing the padding before cutting and installing the broadloom carpeting on top.

Finally, we’ll return all of your furniture back to its original position and leave your home just like we found it (but with a new carpet!).

If you have any questions about the carpet installation process, or the right type of product for your home, don’t hesitate to contact us – as Vancouver’s experts in carpet flooring, we would love to give you the answers you need.

CARPET FLOORING FAQ
How long does carpet flooring last?
Depending on the style, material, level of traffic and the level of maintenance, carpet flooring can last anywhere between 5 to 15 years. The most common reasons carpet is replaced are either deep stains, or the wearing down of the carpet over time due to traffic.
Should I pick broadloom or carpet tiles?
The biggest advantage of carpet tiles is installation, which can be done without the cutting and fitting that comes with broadloom. The individual tiles can also be easily swapped out and replaced in case of soiling or other damage, without having to replace a whole room or floor’s worth of carpet. They also tend to be cheaper.

Broadloom offers you more choices, as you can customize your choice of padding and carpet separately, and pick any style and pattern you desire without selecting from pre-made tile choices. However, this product is more expensive and installation is more complicated.
How should I select my carpet material?
The most important factors when making a decision on carpeting material are level of traffic, level of moisture, risk of staining, and price.

For example, a wool carpet would have medium durability, a vulnerability to moisture and staining, and a high price, whereas a nylon carpet would have high durability, a strong resistance to moisture and staining, and a medium price. A buyer with chemical sensitivities, however, may still opt for the wool carpet if the areas of installation are appropriate.
